Anaheim, CA - The California Construction and Industrial Materials Association (CalCIMA) announced its 2025 Excellence in Safety Awards winners at the 2025 Education Conference in Anaheim, CA on November 12. These awards acknowledge the companies and individuals who make safety a top priority every day through leadership, innovation, creativity, and for going above and beyond specific acts.

CalCIMA's Safety and Health Committee Chairs Russell Morton, National Ready Mixed Concrete Company and Matthew Smylie, Ford Construction Co. presented the awards.

Safety Award winners are chosen based on essays detailing safety initiatives and practices occurring at each mine or plant, and a panel of judges from CalCIMA's Safety and Health Committee review and choose the winners.

The Excellence in Safety Awards honor different categories of mines and plants, such as aggregate, industrial minerals, asphalt, and concrete, as well as special recognition and individual safety leadership awards.

2025 Excellence in Safety Award Winners

Large Aggregate Mine: Irwindale Sand and Gravel Plant - United Rock Products

United Rock Products' Irwindale Sand and Gravel Plant won the Large Aggregate Mine award for a multitude of reasons. The mine installed a proactive program to track non-injury incidents, as well as a rake system on top of the hopper to allow clearing of material. Irwindale also staged a crisis drill to help with communication and emergency responses, and fostered relationships with the local fire department.

Small Aggregate Mine: Table Mountain Quarry - George Reed

George Reed's Table Mountain Quarry earned the Small Aggregate Mine award due to its new implementations, such as red safety helmets for new employees, digital visitor management software, and eye level “story book signage” for customer trucks on the mine. The overall coordination between management and supervisor teams led George Reed to earn this award.

Concrete Plant: Escondido Plant - Vulcan Materials Company / Superior Ready Mix

Vulcan Materials Company / Superior Ready Mix's Escondido Plant earned the Concrete Plant award for its commitment to safety following a near tragic accident due to brake failure on a mixer truck. In order to reduce the number of times drivers have to get out of trucks and prevent future accidents, employees installed pneumatic tube systems to route delivery tickets, relocated water stations to combine operational activities in one place, and developed an electrical circuit from cab door to parking brake in order to alert employees if the brake isn't in use.

Outstanding Safety Leadership

Carl Morello, Graniterock

Carl Morello, Fleet Systems Manager at Graniterock, won the Outstanding Safety Leadership Award through his innovation in launching an on-board telematics system with both driver-facing and forward facing cameras on a fleet of 476 trucks. His character and people skills allowed others to trust the implementation of the new system, and as a result, it allows Graniterock to communicate its safe driving to the community.

Alan Goede, 711 Materials

Alan Goede, Mine Operator at 711 Materials, also earned the Outstanding Safety Leadership award. The sole mine operator at his mine site, Goede made multiple safety improvements in his spare time with no addition of new equipment, including putting a portable crusher in a central location for observation, and implementing the breakdown of the dry side of the plant to rebuild in a safer location. Due to Goede's efforts, the plant received its first zero-citation inspection in 20 years!

Safety Professional: Matt Wright, Holliday Rock

Matt Wright, Safety Manager of Holliday Rock, earned the Safety Professional Award. Wright began as a mixer driver 20 years ago and has never lost sight of the importance of safety. He makes himself available all day every day to mixer drivers' calls, and proves to be a reliable leader by constantly visiting delivery sites to ensure the path is safe. Wright launched several new innovations with fleets, including truck-type specific training lists, a defensive driving program, an ongoing forum for drivers to discuss safety, and real-time driver monitoring.

Congratulations to CalCIMA's 2025 Excellence in Safety Award winners!

CalCIMA member companies produce the essential materials and minerals that build California. Our operations are essential to California's present and future. If it's built, we're in it.
